Blinds trends by Dave Nemeth

There is currently a large shift in direction taking place both locally as well as internationally in the move away from curtains towards blinds. Exceptionally popular in the 80's, technological advancements have once again made this window covering trendy and desirable. The varieties of options are immense insuring there are options to delight the senses of both contemporary and well as classical tastes.

Overall trend directions point to a simplified uncluttered space, with a reduction in glitz and glam and unnecessary ornamentation and embellishment. Even hardcore traditionalists are being a little less rigid and appreciating a more simplified approach to decor and design.

Possibly the most popular style of blind over recent years has been the wooden Venetian slatted blind. These are available in different widths and either as real timber or cheaper faux wood options, due to the timeless style of blind in a host of different timber finishes adds immediate warmth to any space. With retro becoming as popular as it is and seemingly still gaining in popularity on the decor front the metal venetian blind, nostalgically puts one straight back to "Americano" 50's. These blinds aluminum louvres allow the flexibility to tilt and filter strong sunlight to provide a tranquil ambiance.

For a more minimalist approach, roller blinds are also becoming a popular choice of homeowners and certainly not limited to commercial spaces. These blinds are available in a wide range of fabrics and textures. Their appeal lies in their simplicity and the fact that they are stylish and easy to operate. The blinds can be rolled up or down to achieve the required level of shading, large ranges of different fabrics, ensure a match for any interior, whether it’s an urban design for a living room or complete blackout for a bedroom. Roller blinds can also be personalised to suit your individuality with finials, braids and valances.

Technology has also played a large role in the development of blinds, not only in the materials themselves which includes terms such as “microban” and “greenguard” but in actual automation. Now with the simple push of a remote controlled button or even smart phone app, one can control the opening and closing of these blinds. They can also be fitted with senses to automatically react to light and heat conditions. These motorised options are available in roller, Venetian, Roman, panel and even outdoor blinds.

Although vertical blinds are still readily available the design and functionality has certainly become somewhat dated and unfortunately not as glamorous as the more retro styles, which have been revived. A good alternative to these however are the sliding panel blinds. The sliding panel blind is an elegant yet bold shading solution for larger windows, patio door and can even be used as a room divider. The blind is made up of large panels of fabric or bamboo, which stack neatly behind one another when open, ensuring maximum light entry. These are also available in a variety of colourways with a host of designer fabrics also available, for the more adventurous individual.

With a host of outdoor varieties also on the market, we also see the increased use of wooden shutters used. Wooden shutters are fantastic for our African weather and give an immediate feeling of being at a resort or a lodge. Wooden shutters can also be used as a divider to break up large rooms and spaces.
With all these options available, there really isn’t any excuse to move away from curtains, especially the "over contrived" varieties of years gone by.
