How to create the ultimate man cave by Dave Nemeth
A dream for many men is a place that is out of bounds for all but the boys, a place to chill and a place to immerse yourself amongst those awesome "man toys". This trend seems to be on the rise with the term not even existing a couple of years back. The idea of the " man cave" is that it is a stand alone space that does not detract from the look and feel of the decor of the rest of the interior.
The first thing to consider when deciding to create such a space or sanctuary is to establish exactly what you plan to have in it. A spare room in a house will generally accommodate little more than a couch and a pool table, whilst an unused double garage will allow for an additional bar and instead of a pool table, possible a mini cinema for watching sport as well as an area for those X boxes or other interactive gaming systems.
If you are actually building on an extension to an existing property, it may be worth your while to invest in an interior designer that can do the proper space planning as well as assisting with the electrical layout and finishes. It may be an idea to go with double thick sound proof walls if you are a music lover and the space will be primarily used as a music room. Sound proofing is generally a good idea as even watching sport can be quite rowdy and loud.
Lighting is key as you want a cosy space which fluorescent lighting just wont give you, make sure you go for energy saving LED lighting which can all be wired up to dimmers. Using a garage can end up being exceptionally hot in summer and cold in winter, so you may want to invest in an air conditioning unit that can regulate the temperature of this space, but where possible, having the ability to allow in natural light will only prove beneficial.
Regardless of what the main focus of this space will be, technology will without a doubt be key, so make sure you have taken this into consideration in your initial planning. Having too few plugs is a common problem, so make sure you have ample and that you have all the necessary points for routers, WI FI and those other tech add ons. Then don't forget, possibly the most important factor, an en-suite toilet. The rest is up to your imagination, bring out the child in you and have some fun........Man.
