Trending ArtyFacts by Dave Nemeth

Design trends are evolving at such a rapid pace that I thought it would be interesting to investigate what trends were taking place with art in people’s homes. This is an area, which is also getting a bit of a quirky and fun overhaul and not taken as seriously as it was in the past. We are living in a visual world where imagery is instantaneous, from smart phones to I-Pads, these devices that we are constantly glued to; bring us images on any imaginable topic from all around the world. This high tech mobility and overall globalisation will certainly play a part in what and how we place art on our walls and our emotional connectivity to imagery.

Having moved away from minimalistic chic, we once again find ourselves hanging art of all descriptions on our walls. Just like the major interior trends, this too is about uniqueness and individuality and although there are still (and will always) be the traditionalists who have a keen passion for oils and watercolours, we start to see a more graphic and realistic approach taking place, and often-in a larger  format. A visual language we are comfortable with, which can immediately create an emotion and connect with our senses; welcome the age of digital printing!

Just as technology is having an impact on most areas of our lives, so too is it affecting what we can place on our walls. We now have unlimited options on what we print and how large we actually print it. The key element here is price, with these processes and techniques becoming more and more affordable. It is with this in mind that I am still amazed by the amount of now Kitsch and cheap reproduction prints we still find in our home stores and even supermarkets, which have been runoff by the thousands in some industrial town in China. If it is a canvas print, you are after, then simply print this yourself or find a specialised store that can print something on canvas that is unique and individual.

What is possibly the most exciting element to these new large format digital printers is the substrate that can now be printed on. No longer limited to paper or canvas, you can now have your photographic images printed on Glass, wood, fabric and even corrugated iron. Instead of simply having an image printed and placed on a wall, you can now have specially printed wallpaper created and have the photographic image or rendering printed on an entire wall or even a ceiling for the exceptionally creative homeowner.

The success of Instagram has become a total phenomenon and helped in gaining this newfound respect and appreciation for photography. These images with a myriad of retro filters and effects are instant and fun and can be printed on a variety of surfaces, and then hung on walls as art. More than ever will we see this trend of photographic images replacing traditional art forms as they speak to us in a different and more personal way.

To add further fuel to the creative fire is the fact that this new way of looking at art is no longer restricted to simply indoors. The ability to print on glass and Perspex now means we have hang beautiful works of art outside from patio’s to poolside’s, outdoors truly do become an extension of our interior spaces. The possibilities become endless, so think off the canvas and see what you can create. - saho
